Through the Lens of JPShoots

Elijah Jimenez-Villicaña

For many young creatives, breaking into sports photography can feel overwhelming. Access is limited, opportunities are competitive, and guidance is often hard to find. For those fortunate enough to cross paths with Jose Perez, known widely as JPShoots, that journey becomes clearer, more grounded, and far more intentional.

Jose’s passion for photography was born not out of a pursuit of recognition, but from a genuine love for moments that matter. A lifelong sports fan, he was immediately drawn to the emotion and intensity of live events, the split-second action, the celebrations, and the unfiltered passion of athletes and fans alike.

“There’s something powerful about freezing those moments in time and telling a story through a single frame,” Perez explains.

That idea sits at the center of Jose’s work. His photography is not only about capturing athletes in motion, but about preserving the feeling of a moment. Whether it is a player celebrating, a team locked in before a match, or the energy surrounding a game, Jose approaches each frame with purpose. His work reflects patience, awareness, and a deep respect for the story happening in front of him.

What began as a weekend hobby, photographing athletes and teams at local parks, soon became the foundation of his growth as a photographer. Those early experiences shaped not only his technical skills, but his appreciation for storytelling, consistency, and showing up even when the path was not fully clear.

Rather than chasing perfection, Jose focused on learning. He refined his eye, studied the game, and built his craft through repetition. Over time, that commitment helped shape him into a photographer whose work feels intentional, honest, and rooted in the emotion of sport.

At the core of his work is passion, something he credits as the driving force behind his continued growth.

“Passion, plain and simple,” Perez says. “The support of my family, friends, and the incredible community of photographers I’ve been lucky enough to connect with keeps me inspired every day.”

That same sense of community is part of what makes Jose stand out. Beyond his work behind the camera, he is the kind of person who makes the creative space feel less intimidating. He is approachable, encouraging, and willing to share what he has learned with those who are still figuring things out.

As someone who personally knows Jose, it is clear that his impact is not limited to photography. He is a genuinely great person, humble, supportive, and intentional in how he carries himself. In an industry where people can sometimes guard opportunities or knowledge, Jose does the opposite. He leads with kindness, honesty, and a real desire to see others grow.

Jose is driven by the desire to improve, not just his craft, but himself.

“I’m driven by the desire to grow, to improve, and to push beyond what I created yesterday. There’s always more to learn, more to explore, and that’s what excites me most.”

That mindset shows in the way he works. Jose understands that photography is a constant process of growth. Every game, every shoot, and every frame becomes another opportunity to improve. His work reflects a photographer who is not satisfied with simply taking pictures, but someone committed to becoming better with every opportunity.

Equally important to his journey is gratitude. Jose openly acknowledges the photographers and creatives who shared their knowledge with him along the way, insights that continue to shape his perspective and approach today. That humility carries forward in how he supports others, offering advice, encouragement, and honesty rather than gatekeeping.

In a media landscape that often prioritizes numbers over nuance, Jose Perez represents something different. His work reminds us that photography is not just about capturing action, but about preserving meaning. His presence in the sports photography community shows that creative success is strongest when it is shared.

Through his lens, Jose Perez captures the emotion of sport. Through his character, he helps others believe they can do the same.

Thank you, JP.
